South Dakota Changes – Track & Field

2026 South Dakota Changes, Clarifications & Reminders

  • A two-pit pole vault system will be used at the State Track & Field Meet.

  • Maintain current procedure for determining starting heights for high jump and pole vault at the State Meet, with the addition of the Games Committee retaining the ability to adjust heights due to unforeseen circumstances.

  • Eliminate the girls’ 100-meter hurdles deviation starting in the 2029 Track & Field season.

  • Class AA – Seed up to the top 12 teams in the last heat of the 4×800 meter relay at the State Meet with the remaining teams going in the first heat, provided there are at least eight teams in the first heat.

South Dakota Modifications to NFHS Rules

  • The distance for the 100 Meter Girls Hurdles shall be as follows: 13 meters from the start line to the first hurdle, eight meters between hurdles, and 15 meters from the final hurdle to the finish line. This deviation will be removed for the 2029 Track & Field season.

  • The 200m Dash may be reversed at any regular season event or at the State Meet to become wind-aided if agreed upon by the Meet Manager and Meet Referee. Additionally, the facility must permit this change by way of having permanent markings on the non-common finish to properly stage the event. Should either official object, or should the markings not be present, the event cannot be reversed. This deviation will be removed for the 2029 Track & Field season.
